Sustainable Purchasing
Sustainable Purchasing of Paper Hand Towel and Toilet Paper
The purchase and supply of paper hand towel and toilet paper into University bathrooms and toilets is managed in conjunction with cleaning services by Property & Campus Services.
Tenders for supply of paper hand towel and toilet paper must account for the following environmental considerations:
‘All tender submissions must include detailed environmental impact information, including energy consumption, in regard to the procurement and transport of the materials used in the manufacture of the items to be supplied as part of this agreement.
It would be preferable that the paper products being supplied are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This is a certification process that involves government, industry and environmental NGOs and ensures that paper and wood is not sourced from forests that have been logged illegally.’
The University of Melbourne currently uses four different types of hand towel. Details and approximate annual quantities are below:
- Ultraslim Hand Towel - 372 cartons per annum (16 packets per carton @ 150 sheets)
- Slimline hand Towel - 2,208 cartons per annum (16 packets per carton @ 250 sheets)
- Interfold hand Towel - 132 cartons per annum (24 packets per carton @ 150 sheets)
- Hand Towel Rolls - 204 cartons per annum (16 rolls per carton @ 90 metres)
Toilet paper is purchased through Jasol Australia.
