- If your area has a Service Level Agreement with the IT Service Desk, the IT Service desk can assist you to determine whether your equipment has a capacity for resale or redeployment, and assist you to dispose of equipment with a resale value.
- Large printers and Multi Function Devices should be disposed of as part of the Tender Process for the asset's replacement. Please note that IT Support is unable to assist with disposal of these items.
For equipment with NO resale value or redeployment capacity
The University of Melbourne has an arrangement for computer recycling with Afterlife Recycling, a not for profit organisation. Computer equipment and old furniture is redirected for reuse to worthy causes, without charge. Afterlife Recycling has a network of willing participants who donate services to make this happen, including Speedie Waste, QED Office Interiors, Robert Gardiner Environmental Services and John Holland Engineering. Computers that are no longer of use are sent to a recycling plant.
How to Use the Computer Recycling Service
Step 1
Departments shall contact their Local IT Support Area or the IT Service Desk for IT-related activities that need to be addressed prior to
the computer equipment being recycled. Please do not skip this step as it prevents exposure of confidential data or violation of software licensing.
Step 2
Departments shall contact their Campus Operational Zone Leader to arrange for a Building Supervisor to collect the equipment after any IT-related activities have been completed. Contact details from Zone Leaders are available from http://www.pb.unimelb.edu.au/campus_op_zones.html.
Note: as of August 2009, we have secured a permanent storage cage for computers awaiting recycling, so there are now no deadlines associated with this program - you can call your Zone Leader to recycle computers at any time.
Step 3
Building Supervisors collect computer equipment for recycling on date and time that was previously organised
with departments.

Disposing of your own personal computer equipment
Please note that we are unable to assist you with disposing of equipment that is your personal property.
A number of free or low cost computer recycling services are available to the community - this list of computer recyclers servicing the City of Melbourne may assist.
