About ISO 14001 certification
Environmental Management System ISO 14001:2004
The University of Melbourne began a formal corporate response to its environmental impact in 1996 with a request for a further comprehensive environmental assessment. As an outcome of this assessment, a management system was chosen as the most appropriate vehicle by which to manage environmental impact. A recommendation to seek accreditation to Environmental Management System (EMS) ISO 14001 was accepted by council in December 1997.
The EMS ISO 14001 is an International Standard. It enables an organisation to formulate a policy regarding environmental objectives taking into account legislative requirements and information about significant environmental impacts.
The EMS is integrated into the University's Safety Management System. All Policies and Procedures for the EMS are located in the Environment Health and Safety Manual.
The Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Unit of Property & Campus Services facilitates and implements the EMS and considers broad environmental commitments directed by the University of Melbourne Environmental Policy.
Through the EHS Unit and dedicated staff, the University has a number of programs in place for:
- Recycling and Waste Management
- Energy – Carbon Footprint
- Sustainable Office/Laboratory
- Sustainable Purchasing
- Sustainable Transport
- Water
ISO 14001 Audits and Certification
The University's ongoing compliance to the ISO 14001 standard is accredited and monitored by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance via the External EHS Audit program, and monitored via the Internal EHS Audit program. More information about the EHS Audit programs is available on the EHS Unit website.
