60 Earth Hour a Success at The University of Melbourne
The University of Melbourne actively participated in 60 Earth Hour by limiting lighting within 200 buildings between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday 29th March 2008.
Kirk Bryant from Nuvo Solutions, the University’s electrical contractor, suggested that it was one of the biggest single sites in Australia to participate in this year's environmental initiative.
The success of 60 Earth Hour at The University of Melbourne was a team effort and particular congratulations should be given to staff from Property & Campus Services, Jo Burrows, Electrical Services Team Leader, Buildings Supervisors including; Michael Barbadonis, Greg Crisfield, Ashleigh Carr, Peter Striglogiannis, Robert Keane, Jim Fair, in addition thanks to Colin Reiter, Tim Thornton, Tony Campbell, Danielle Rostan-Herbert and Belinda Rule. Thanks also to Nuvo Solutions, who provided several staff for the evening, and Datacom, our BAS contractor, who assisted with pre programming controls to ensure lights were switched off wherever possible using the automation systems.
Participating in this initative has highlighted some operational improvements that can be investigated to reduce the University's annual demand for energy, these being:
- Laboratory lights left on continually
- Toilet lights left on continually
- Foyer lights left on continually
- General lighting not controlled by Building Automation Systems (BAS)
The University of Melbourne plans to incorporate all these findings in its continuation toward reducing its carbon footprint and moving towards a sustainable campus.
