About the Talloires Declaration
The University of Melbourne's action on sustainability is guided by the world-wide Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future's Talloires Declaration, of which the University is a signatory. Education at all levels can shape the world of tomorrow, equipping individuals and societies with the skills, perspectives, knowledge and values to live and work in a sustainable way. The Talloires agreement includes a ten-point action plan to achieve this through:
- Operations for Sustainability-The Sustainability Unit within Property and Campus Services reports on operations for sustainability including energy, water, waste management, sustainable building design and transport.
- Teaching for Sustainability-The Office for Environmental Programs offers the Graduate Environmental Program. The Bachelor of Environments (link: http://www.benvs.unimelb.edu.au/) is offered at Undergraduate level.
- Research for Sustainability: The Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute (link: http://www.sustainable.unimelb.edu.au/) offers a portal to sustainability related research at the University of Melbourne. The MSSI aims to progress sustainability as a societal goal in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
The Executive Director, Property and Campus Services, reports each year to University management on the University's progress in implementing the Declaration.
