Are you our next sustainability intern?

Apply now for one of two sustainability internships with the University of Melbourne's Sustainability Team.

The Sustainability Team is looking for postgraduate students with an interest in sustainability to fulfil two separate internship roles. The roles are open to current University of Melbourne students who are enrolled in a postgraduate internship subject in semester one of 2020, such as Internship in Development (DEVT90002) or equivalent.

Each intern will be responsible for developing and implementing a sustainability themed project over the course of 100 hours in semester one. This usually will equate to one eight-hour day of work per week. The two opportunities available are detailed below.

Waste Project Intern

One of the University’s key targets in the Sustainability Plan 2017-2020 is reducing our waste to landfill to 20kg per person. The Sustainability Team is looking for a dedicated student intern to assist with the implementation of waste focused projects including the removal of single-use plastics on campus and investigating opportunities to reduce organic waste deposited to landfill.

The role will involve drafting action plans, communicating with vendors on campus, researching possible solutions for these problems and developing recommendations for best practice. Other general tasks may include administrative tasks with the opportunity to shadow members of our team. Students most suited for this role are in the last year of their postgraduate degree, have adequate written and verbal skills, the ability to self-manage, can think critically and have an overall engaging persona.

Sustainable Events Project Intern

The University runs thousands of events every year of which there can be significant environmental impacts, including waste and high food mileage. The Sustainability Team is passionate about reducing this impact in 2020 and is looking for a dedicated student to assist with the research for a sustainable events guide. The role will involve conducting research on the environmental impact of events, where the biggest issues lie, and how to reduce them. This role may also include assisting the Sustainability Team with other projects. Self-organisation, time management and excellent written and verbal skills are essential for this role.

Both roles are unpaid and must be completed as part of a University of Melbourne internship subject.

To apply, send your resume and cover letter, addressing the selection criteria and the internship subject you are enrolled in, to raveena.grace@unimelb.edu.au by Monday 3rd February 2020 with the project you wish to apply for as the subject e.g. 'Waste Project Intern Application'.
