University participants nominated in Green Impact Australasia Awards

The University of Melbourne has received two nominations for the 2019 Green Impact Australasia Awards.

George He from Green Impact team Advancing Research and Sustainable Environments (ARSE) has been named a finalist in the Student Champion category, while team Eco Heroes, made up of staff from the Abbotsford Early Learning Centre, has been named in the Engagement Innovation category.

This is the first year of the Green Impact Australasia Awards, which celebrate the innovations in sustainability achieved by Green Impact participants across the region.

George completed his second year as a Project Assistant with ARSE (from the University’s Otolaryngology department) in 2019, and has become an integral member of their team.

As a Project Assistant, George volunteers his time to help the staff team implement Green Impact actions and stay motivated with their sustainability goals. This year George is a Project Mentor, a role in which he assists new student volunteers to build their skills and navigate their roles as Project Assistants.

The Eco Heroes team has been awarded with the Green Impact Champion title at a University level since the program began in 2017. The team has been nominated at an Australasian level for their work organising an ‘Eco Heroes Action Week’, which saw almost 200 families of children at the centre engage in activities including clothing and book swaps, planting experiences and community rubbish collections.

Eco Heroes also continue to positively influence the youth of tomorrow by encouraging sustainable behaviours at their centre.

The awards will be announced via live-stream on the Green Impact Australasia Facebook page at 6pm Thursday 2 July.
