Community Garden

The University of Melbourne Community Garden is student-run with the support of our Grounds Team. It serves as a hub for the community to learn new skills and connect over their shared passion for the environment.

Students and staff are invited to wander through the garden, pick some of the produce and even grow their own plants in the designated beds.

The Community Garden Supervisors are responsible for the general maintenance of the garden, hosting working bees and engaging people through the garden's social media page.

Story from the Community Garden Supervisor

Nonica Gurrala, Masters of Environment

Identifying the species and category of plants to estimate their impact on each other is challenging. Physical labour, especially on a hot sunny day, is tough. To protect plants from snails and pests can be hard as well.

Garden taught me skills such as patience, attention to detail (to identify interactions of plants with their surroundings), planning (to prepare the beds and sow according to individual species’ growth cycles), punctuality and discipline. It also taught me an appreciation for food and farmers, and the dedication to care for the nourishment of life and its growth.

Now I’ve noticed a lot of people spending time in the garden, strolling around, or having their lunch and snacks!

The Community Garden belongs to everyone on campus. Pluck any fruit and produce from the garden. Plant your favourite veggies and herbs (make sure you label whatever you plant with the name and date of planting). You can also visit to interact with the plants or even play some music for them. Hope our garden inhabitants see more human friends this year.
