Biodiversity Month
Become a citizen scientist and uncover the biodiversity of our campuses
In September, we have the opportunity to celebrate the incredible and unique ecosystems on our campuses. Join us in exploring, protecting, and celebrating the vibrant biodiversity that thrives here.
Biodiversity Month is a special time in Australia when people are encouraged to connect with nature and take action to protect and conserve biodiversity locally and globally. Throughout the month, the Sustainability Delivery team will host a month-long BioBlitz using iNaturalist and run two events during the 2025 Sustainability Week , to offer the chance to learn about and contribute to protecting our campus biodiversity.
What is a BioBlitz?
A BioBlitz is a collaborative event where the community comes together to survey a specific area and collect as many observations of local biodiversity as possible. This means recording sightings of various plants, animals, insects, and fungi to gain a comprehensive understanding of the area's natural life.
To participate, download the iNaturalist app and register your participation. This app enables you to document and share your observations of various species, helping us, as citizen scientists, to better understand and manage campus biodiversity. By registering, you not only contribute valuable data but also have the chance to win an exciting prize.
What’s more, student participants can earn recognition toward Melbourne Plus, and Green Impact participants can complete toolkit actions.
