Green Impact for students

With Green Impact, students can make real, sustainable change for the future while gaining volunteer experience.

So you want to join Green Impact? That’s great! There’s a few different ways you can join, so let’s break it down for you.

Join as a team

Best suited to

Students in a club, society, college, student accomodation or students with a space of influence who want to reduce the environmental impact of their activities and events.

Benefits

  • Work with peers to complete sustainable actions where you have a   space of influence i.e. at college, in club rooms or society office.
  • Use the toolkit to gain a focused approach to tackling key   sustainability issues within your club, society or college.
  • Gain access to specialised University resources.
  • When your team earns a Silver Award (350 points), gain volunteering hours to add to your Melbourne Plus.
  • Be supported by other team members to fulfil bigger projects with a bigger impact.
  • Have the chance to win ‘Student Champion’ award at the Awards   Ceremony.

Restrictions

  • You must have a team of at least 2 people to join.
  • You must have a permanent space of influence on campus.

Time commitment

As many or as little hours as you want.

Join any time since the toolkit is open, and complete actions through to October.

  • How to sign up
    1. Sign up to the toolkit by filling in your details. Select your team from the drop down if joining an existing team or come up with a fun name for your new team.
    2. Start recruiting more team members from around your area and explore the toolkit together.
    3. As you explore the toolkit throughout the year, check in to the Participants Portal to see upcoming Green Impact events, view key dates, access resources, and get answers to frequently asked questions.

Join as an individual

Best suited to

Students who want to reduce their own environmental impact, but don’t have access to a permanent space of influence on campus, and aren’t part of a club or society.

Benefits

  • Work to your own schedule to complete sustainable actions, guided   by the Green Impact toolkit and resources.
  • Be empowered to take sustainability from campus to your own   community.
  • Use the toolkit to gain a focused approach to tackling key   sustainability issues.
  • When you reach 350 points, gain volunteering hours to add to your Melbourne Plus.
  • Can join online.
  • Have the chance to win ‘Student Champion’ award at the Awards   Ceremony

Restrictions

  • No direct team members working formally with you.

Time commitment

As many or as little hours as you want.

Be a Project Assistant

Project Assistants volunteer to help staff Green Impact teams to log actions throughout the winter break. No prior experience or specialised knowledge in sustainability is required, only an enthusiasm to learn and commitment to your team.

Applications for Project Assistants are open until September. Sign up to our mailing list to be notified of future volunteering opportunities.

Best suited to

Individual students who want to empower others to reduce their environmental impact on campus, learn more about the University, and work with staff teams to help them achieve their sustainability goals.

Benefits

  • Undertake training and learn valuable workplace skills like teamwork and communication, project management and stakeholder engagement.
  • Gain practical experience in implementing sustainability actions in a workplace.
  • Be assigned to assist a staff team, and therefore develop connections with academic or professional staff.
  • Gain volunteering hours to add to your Melbourne Plus program.
  • Be part of a network of other Project Assistants for support.
  • Learn effective behaviour change techniques.
  • Have the chance to win ‘Student Champion’ award at the Awards   Ceremony.
  • Also able to join Green Impact in a student team or as an individual.

Restrictions

  • Must be available in person during Semester 2.

Time commitment

At least three hours during Semester 2.

Access to resources, events and Green Impact toolkit?

Yes.

Dates

Apply before September and be ready to join an introductory training session in Semester 2.

  • Expectations of Project Assistants:
    • Encourage, motivate and be a leader in their assigned Green Impact team in implementing sustainability actions in its department or area of work.
    • Attend training and support sessions to learn environmental management and behaviour change techniques in the workplace.
    • Meet regularly with your assigned Green Impact team during the Winter Break.
    • Communicate with the Sustainability Team on the progress of your Green Impact team.

Be a Student Auditor

Students can also volunteer to conduct an environmental audit of sustainability actions logged by Green Impact teams after the close of the program. No prior experience is required and you will be trained in auditing processes prior to the auditing day.

Best suited to

Individual students who want to volunteer with Green Impact but can’t commit for the full year, or have found out about the program later in the year.

Benefits

  • Undertake training and learn valuable workplace skills like teamwork and communication.
  • Learn how to conduct an environmental audit.
  • Meet staff and students from around the University.
  • Gain volunteering hours to add to your Melbourne Plus program.

Restrictions

  • Position only available in October/November.
  • Must be available for the full training and audit day to participate.

Time commitment

One full day in October/November, comprising of:

  • 3 hours of auditor training
  • 1–2 hours per audit

Access to resources, events and Green Impact toolkit?

No.

Dates

Wednesday, October 25 from 9am - 5pm.

  • Expectations of Student Auditors:
    • Attend training to learn how to conduct an environmental audit.
    • Work with other Student Auditors to audit 1–2 Green Impact teams’ actions within one day.
