Choose to Reuse at Union House

You can now avoid single-use packaging with meals purchased at Union House thanks to our new reusable plate service.

The Choose to Reuse Plate Program has officially launched this week, providing a convenient waste-free option when purchasing food and drink from Union House, Parkville Campus.

Plates, bowls, mugs and cutlery are available to have meals or drinks served in from any retailer at Union House, and are washed by our cleaning team after use. By requesting a reusable dish from your food retailer you can easily avoid unnecessary food packaging at meal times.

How to use the service:

  1. Simply ask your food retailer to serve your meal on a reusable dish or collect one for yourself at multiple pick-up points inside the building.
  2. Once finished with your meal, scrape your plate of remaining food scraps at a food scraping station.
  3. Leave your used dish at any dirty drop-off point, available at all dual recycling and landfill bins in the building.
  4. Your dishes will be collected and washed by the cleaning team at the Dish Wash Hub, cleaned and ready for your next visit.

The Choose to Reuse Plate Program has been delivered by the Sustainability Team, Campus Services, and is driven by the university’s target of reducing waste to landfill to 20kg per person by 2020, as outlined in the Sustainability Plan 2017–2020.
