Endangered tree planted at Parkville campus

The Grounds Team in Campus Services have planted rare tree Araucaria nemorosa (or Boise araucaria) at Parkville Campus.

The tree was planted in May and is endemic to southern New Caledonia. It is listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species 2010 because of threats from housing, mining, logging, fire and recreational activities in its natural habitat.

Normally growing to about 15 metres in habitat, the Araucaria nemorosa will most likely not reach that height in the Melbourne climate.

By planting this tree the University is contributing to the conservation of the species, as well as the rich collection of biodiversity our campus grounds are home to.
